Penguin manufactures Cast Steel Thread Protectors with Lifting Bails (CSTP) ranging from 2-3/8” to 8-5/8” with REG, IF, FH, HTPAC, XH, H-90 and NC connections. The Cast Steel Thread Protectors are manufactured from quality steel castings conforming to ASTM A216 Grade WCB. Penguin manufactured CSTPs are heat treated to give 60,000 psi tensile strength and 30,000 psi yield strength and are furnished with heavy duty bails suitable for safely handling BHA components such as drill collars, drill pipes, tool joints, stabilizers, subs, bits etc. which are commonly used in the oil & gas industry. Threads and shoulders are precision machined to API standards. Also included are Safe Working Load certificates. Penguin makes these bails in various sizes and thread forms ranging from 2-3/8” to 8-5/8” as per the requirements of our customers. Quality of all the bails are strictly monitored. Each lifting bail leaving Penguin's facility is 100 pct. MPI tested and also the representative samples of bails from each heat is load tested at Penguin's in-house mechanical lab.
CSTPs should always be used to protect both the pin and box connections when BHA components are being shipped or stored at the warehouse or handled at the rig location. CSTPs should be shifted to a storage area once they are removed from the BHA components at the rig location. Once the thread protectors are removed from the component ends, component end connections should be cleaned thoroughly with a solvent, wiped dry with a clean rag and to be inspected for any burrs or marks on the shoulders. During manual handling of thread protectors on the rig floor, extreme caution should be exercised in order to prevent injury to personnel on location. Due caution and care should be exercised to not let the thread protectors lost in wellbore causing expensive fishing operations and extensive downtime for the rig and the well.
